Independent Learner Communities

The Faison Center’s Independent Learner Communities are the school’s most academically rigorous day school programs, ideal for students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and other developmental disabilities who are performing at or near grade level but need special educational assistance.

The Independent Learner Communities offer instruction utilizing applied behavior analysis (ABA) in one-on-one, group, peer tutoring, personalized instruction and community-based settings. In partnership with other community organizations, students have the opportunity to engage in social interactions with typically developing peers. The Independent Learner Communities are accredited by the CABAS® Board and the Virginia Association of Independent Specialized Education Facilities (VAISEF), and are licensed by the Virginia Department of Education.

Emergent Independent Learner Community

The Emergent Independent Learner Community program is distinct from the Upper School program in that it focuses more on core versus applied academics. Students in this program often have similar profiles to those enrolled in the accelerated independent learner community but require more intensive behavioral or academic support for the time being.

Accelerated Independent Learner Community

accelerated_independent_learnerAccommodating students up to age 22, the Accelerated Independent Learner program is closest to grade level. The program is more academically rigorous than some of The Faison Center’s other programs, as it helps prepare students for community college or a four-year college degree program.

The Accelerated Independent Learner Community serves students who are performing at or near grade level in one or more core curriculum areas. Currently, this is the least restrictive educational setting at The Faison Center, with a more typical classroom structure and group environment.

Schedule and Location

Both of the Independent Learner programs at The Faison Center are open year-round, Monday through Friday from 8:15am until 2:15pm. The Emergent Independent Learner program operates at the Center’s main campus building, while the Accelerated Independent Learner program has its own facility at 1506 Willow Lawn Drive, within walking distance from the main campus.
